Increasing Awareness Step-by-Step for Intrauterine Growth Restriction

This is the second year in which a virtual 5K walk will be held to increase awareness about Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), a medical condition that affects the growth of babies in the womb.

The virtual 5K walk will be a way to educate the world about IUGR and raise funds for the Graham's Foundation, which is an incredible organization that supports parents of preemies coping with premature birth and other challenges. I am very fond of the Graham's Foundation and all of the work that it does -- and am honored to serve as a parent mentor for the organization.

I plan to walk in the virtual 5K in honor of my daughter, Emily, who was diagnosed with IUGR and born at 28 weeks gestation -- weighing one pound, eight ounces. The 5K event will start on March 11, 2015, and will end on March 13, 2015, which will be the second-ever IUGR Awareness Day.

Since the 5K is virtual, I get to choose my own course and whether to walk, run, prance, gallop, crawl, use the treadmill, or head to the outdoors to complete the race. I will also have the opportunity to complete the race all at once or divide it into shorter segments over the allotted time-frame.

I'm not sure exactly what the weather will be like in early March, but I hope to include Emily and our dog, Bentley, in my walk again this year -- and maybe even some other preemie families. As in the past, I'll wear my race bib, which will hopefully generate some attention in my community. I will also find a creative way to decorate Emily's stroller to garner some additional interest.

As we take steps to improve awareness about IUGR, I'd love to hear from you. Please let me know if you have you registered for the virtual 5K to raise awareness about IUGR. It would be great to connect with others who will be hoofing 3.1 miles with me. I'd also be interested to learn if you will be honoring IUGR Awareness Day in other ways. Please comment below to let me know of your plans!
