Celebrating Giant Panda Bao Bao's Birthday in Style

Bao Bao, the National Zoo’s giant panda, is celebrating her very first birthday on August 23. My family is excited to attend her birthday party. We plan to bring Bao Bao a homemade birthday card. We also plan to focus on panda-related crafts and other activities throughout the week.

It’s hard to believe that Bao Bao weighed less than my micro preemie, Emily, at birth. Bao Bao was born last year weighing only four and a half ounces. I know that fluid ounces of volume are different from ounces in weight, but in my overly simplistic view of things, she was about one-fourth of the size of a can of soda.
Emily was born weighing one pound, eight ounces – which again, in my oversimplified view, is about two cans of soda. She currently weighs about 19 pounds, which is less than Bao Bao's current weight. According to reports, Bao Bao weighed-in at 24 pounds in March.

Bao Bao is one of only several hundred giant pandas alive today in captivity. As few as 1,600 giant pandas survive in the mountain forests of central China, according to the National Zoo. More than 300 giant pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the globe. The majority of these pandas can be found in China.
Bao Bao is beautiful and very playful. Just like my preemie, Emily, it seems like Bao Bao has a tough time staying still to pose for pictures. In past visits to the zoo, it's as if Bao Bao plays peek-a-boo with me and the camera. For the most part, I’ve mostly only caught small patches of her fur in photos (with the exception of the first picture featured in this blog post).

Although my pictures of Bao Bao aren’t the greatest, I was able to get some good shots of the adult giant pandas -- Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. I can’t tell which giant panda is Mei Xiang and which Tian Tian is. Can you?

I’ve already picked out the perfect outfit for Emily to wear to Bao Bao’s upcoming birthday party.  I purchased a panda top, striped leggings, and a cardigan sweater for the occasion on-sale at Gymboree.

If I had to pick, favorite part of the outfit is the adorable Front and Back Panda Top – which has graphics on both sides. The front of the t-shirt features the face of a giant panda and the back of the shirt features a giant panda’s rear-end.
The Striped Poppy Leggings are simply adorable.  Each pant leg features a small flower with a polka-dot button on the lower portion of each leg. The Dots and Stripes Cardigan is super cute and very detailed. The pockets on the cardigan are black with white polka dots. And, the buttons on the cardigan are a whimsical feature. Four of the buttons feature polka dots and one is the solid color, pink. What’s your favorite part of this outfit?
Please let me know what you have planned for the week in the comment section below. Preemie Blessings wishes you a wonderful week full of smiles and happiness.

  2. It is a shame that Panda's population is so small now. They are such a beautiful animal.
