32nd Annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala

Last night, I was thrilled to attend the 32nd Annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala in Washington, DC. I was honored to attend the fundraising dinner as a guest with my good friend, Pattie DeLoatche.

Although I haven't seen Pattie in quite some time due to flu and RSV season, I felt like we picked up right where we left off. Pattie and I first met when I started working for U.S. Senator John Ensign (NV) on both the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

We worked together on two federal bills that were signed into law about umbilical cord blood banking.  While working together on Capitol Hill, we also developed a strong friendship.

Pattie has been through many ups and downs with me. She was the one friend I confided in about my pregnancy and my baby's poor growth in the womb. Pattie visited me during my hospitalization and Emily's stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

I was extremely flattered to learn that Pattie became involved in the March of Dimes because of my prematurity story. She currently serves as a member of the March of Dimes 2014 Gourmet Gala Finance Committee.

March of Dimes Gourmet Gala

The March of Dimes Gourmet Gala is a fundraising dinner with a Capitol Hill twist. Several U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives participate in the event as celebrity chefs, preparing and serving their favorite dishes.

This year's dinner was held at the beautiful National Building Museum. Before the event started, I ran into six-year-old Aidan Lamothe, the 2014 March of Dimes National Ambassador, and his mother, Jill.

Aidan was born at 28 weeks gestation -- just like my daughter, Emily. At birth, he weighed three pounds and spent seven weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

As the 2014 March of Dimes National Ambassador, he is proudly travelling the country with his parents to help raise funds and awareness for premature birth.

After hamming it up with Aidan, I was able to taste several dishes that were prepared and served by U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives during the reception hour.

The dinner program consisted of remarks from Mrs. Bobbi Barrasso (U.S. Senator John Barrasso's wife); Mrs. Marty Hinojosa (U.S. Representative RubĂ©n Hinojosa's wife); Dr. Jennifer Howse, the March of Dimes President; and many others.

I saw many different U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives, including U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (GA), U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (NE), U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN), and U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (MO).

Additionally, I had the opportunity to visit with several friends and former colleagues from my time on Capitol Hill. It was great to see some friendly familiar faces. I also enjoyed the opportunity to share my personal prematurity story with others.

I am feeling very thankful for organizations and individuals who are working to prevent premature birth and help women have safe, full-term pregnancies, and healthy babies.

  4. What a great friend! I'm so happy you have so many supportive people around you and are still getting to know more! What a great cause as well. My kids were both born early and though it wasn't much, it did affect them a little so I am happy it's an issue that is being brought to light to educate people about it! Good luck to you on this mission :)
